Geomapping Gun Owners

Posted by Kevin Amerson on

I saw this article published by the NRA and had to check it out. I'm a software developer as well and am also always thinking of apps that might benefit our community so this article was of particular interest to me.

Original: http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/articles/2013/6/outrage-of-the-week-new-app-targets-gun-owners.aspx

I was surprised, and visited the app store and found the following description of this app:

Geolocate Dangerous Guns and Owners with the Gun Geo Marker. Geolocation means marking dangerous sites on the App's map so that you and others can be aware of the risks in your neighborhood.

This kind of language reminds me of that Tom Cruise movie where they went around arresting people for "Pre-crimes". It is really sad that the application owner is also a gun owner and publishing an app that basically asks citizens to cite each-other for the possibility of committing a crime, not even committing a crime, this app asks citizens to cite each other for the possibility of danger. I feel like it is part of a much bigger trend that I really hope that we can reverse. Not only have we decidedly given up on the idea that you need to have criminal intent in order to be guilty of a crime, now you're being tagged and targeted as possibly dangerous for simply trying to live.
